  6.            Making the Colors in PAF 2.2 Permanent

  12.      One of the most frustrating things about PAF for me has
  13. been that when I want to make a simple permanent change in
  14. the PAF configuration, is having to reset the colors each
  15. time (i.e.,  when I had to experiment with the printer
  16. time-out value).
  17.  
  18.      The following instructions will alleviate this problem.
  19. (PAF support in SLC has indicated they are working on this
  20. one for a future maintenance release.)
  21.  
  22.      1.   Start the program in the usual manner by
  23.           typing "PAF" <enter>. Select 1. Family
  24.           Records from the Access Menu.
  25.  
  26.      2.   Select A. Utilities, then 4. Temporarily Change
  27.           Configuration.
  28.  
  29.      3.   Move the cursor to the Screen Color section of the
  30.           first page.  Experiment with the colors until you
  31.           are happy with the color combinations.  (Press F3
  32.           to test the colors.)

  34.      4.   Write the code numbers for the colors below.

  37.           Normal         __________          __________
  38.           Bold           __________          __________
  39.           Reverse        __________          __________

  42.      5.   Press F2, F2, 0, 0, <enter>.  You should now be at
  43.           the Access Menu.

  45.      6.   Select 5. Configure Programs.
  46.  
  47.      7.   Select 8. Create/Modify Computer Entry.  Answer
  48.           the 3 questions that follow.

  50.      Next is the menu for Computer Set-up.

  52.      8.   Select 3. Modify Codes for an Existing Computer.
  53.           Select whichever is appropriate for you.  These
  54.           instructions assume you have selected 1. IBM PC,
  55.           XT, AT, PS/2 or Fully Compatible.

  57.      9.   Move the cursor to the bottom of the screen using
  58.           either the cursor keys or by pressing enter.  Be
  59.           careful not to change any of the default entries.

  61.      10.  Refer to the notes you made previously in
  62.           Temporarily Change Configuration and enter the
  63.           appropriate codes in the proper location.

  65.      11.  When finished, a question will appear, "Do you
  66.           want to print the current key assignments?"
  67.           Unless you desire to make changes in the way the
  68.           keyboard functions, answer No.
  69.  
  70.      12.  If you do want to make such changes, you may do so
  71.           now, otherwise, press 0.

  74.      13.  You should now be at the Access Menu.
  75.           Select 2. Select a Computer From List.
  76.           Select the computer you just modified.

  78.      14.  Again, you should be at the Access Menu.  Select
  79.           5. Continue with Configuration.

  81.      15.  Select your printer.

  83.      16a. If this is a first-time installation, make any
  84.           changes to the defaults on this screen, press F1
  85.           to continue, make the appropriate changes on the
  86.           next screen and then save by pressing F1.

  88.      16b. If you have previously installed PAF and are only
  89.           making changes to the default colors, you may now
  90.           press F1, F1.
  91.  
  92.      17.  Update the various PAF programs (CONFIG, FR, RDF,
  93.           FRCHK, GIE, Convert, FRU, RS, FRED, HQ) as
  94.           appropriate.  If you keep the Research Data Filer
  95.           (RDF) data files in a separate subdirectory,
  96.           answer No when prompted to update RDF.

  98.           When CONFIG asks if you want to update any other
  99.           programs answer No.  CONFIG will then ask if you
  100.           want to quit. Answer No.  You will then be
  101.           returned to the first configuration screen.  Make
  102.           the appropriate change to the field requesting
  103.           the location of the data files.

  105.           Enter the full drive and path to the location of
  106.           the RDF data files. Press F1, F1.  CONFIG will
  107.           then ask if you want to update the same programs
  108.           as before.  Answer No to all of the prompts except
  109.           RDF, until CONFIG asks if you want to quit. Answer
  110.           Yes.
